We’ll be staying at an Eco Retreat, an innovative model of sustainable accommodation, and the first of its kind in New Zealand. The site was designed with some of the most rigorous sustainability standards in the world. Sitting right on the banks of Lake Wakatipu, and with the Humbolt and Richardson mountains as its backdrop, it is one of the world’s first Net Positive energy visitor destinations. It’s a stunning, heritage style homestead that was designed in collaboration with local artisans and craftspeople.
Located near Glenorchy, you’ll be just a stone’s throw away from the historic township with quaint general stores, cafes, and boutiques. Once you’ve soaked up a bit of history, you’re well-placed for a short wander down to beautiful lagoons, or through one of its many hiking trails.
Just a note – as an eco-retreat, they are committed to having the lightest eco footprint possible. It is strongly recommended that you use the toiletries provided, so as to prevent any unnecessary contamination of the surrounding wetlands and lakes.
FAQ’s
How do I get there?
We are near the ancient town Glenorchy, about a 45-minute drive from Queenstown. There are no buses from Queenstown to Glenorchy, so you will need to hire a car. If you’re coming solo or in a pair and would like to carpool, hit us up and we’ll put you in contact with our other travelers.
What should I bring?
Queenstown can get pretty chilly in the wintertime, with temperatures dropping below zero at night. Make sure to bring plenty of warm clothes (a base layer of thermals is a must), comfortable walking shoes, and swimmers for our forest swim. We’ll also be doing lots of yoga, so bring a few spare changes of clothes for those sessions. Anything comfortable and breathable that you can move in is perfect!
There will be lots of time for quiet reflection, so bring a book and a notebook for writing if you feel that way inclined.
Finally, we are staying at an eco-retreat. This means that it strives to have a positive impact on its surrounds. The accommodation provides its own greywater safe soap, shampoo, and conditioner, however if you have your own, feel free to bring those.
