with a never-ending list of achievements, bri e lee is a bold, fearless and inspiring author. bri aims to encourage her audience to be honest and is unafraid to challenge society’s unwritten rules through her writing. having graduated from university of queensland with a bachelor of law and arts, bri has worked as a judge’s associate, this experience led her to write about challenges which women endure in all facets of life. winning several awards, bri’s first book, eggshell skull is a confronting memoir that delves into her deeply personal history and addresses the sexist barriers which hinder women when seeking justice. she has also published two other incredible books: beauty and who gets to be smart. bri is an incredible advocate for criminal justice reform and women’s rights. her pieces continue to awe, educate and act as a reflection to remind people of the reality that we live in. it will be very exciting to learn from such a phenomenal author. we will have a pre-reading list prior to trip departure so we can connect over shared material. you can follow bri on her instagram @bri.e.lee or https://www.bri-lee.com
an invitation from bri
I am so excited for this trip. Travel hasn’t been possible for so many of us for such a long time, and we’ve all been sitting on ideas and plans that feel sort of stuck. In my writing career I have benefitted from several interstate and international residencies and trips, and I always find a change of scenery especially conducive to the focus and commitment writing demands.
Being out of our usual environments and in amongst nature is especially fantastic for clear thinking as well. I can think of nothing better than starting each day with a long walk and ending it in front of a roaring campfire. (And as Woolf says, ““One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” - It’s fantastic what you can get done when someone else is taking care of dinner!) Good writing is born of good thinking and good reading. Over three nights together we’re going to have great conversations, great food, and come away recharged and committed to our words and projects.

faq’s
what if COVID affects the trip?
we will be watching the border and health situation very closely. rest assured that if COVID impacts the majority of travellers we will postpone to a later date.
do i need to be a writer?
we are all writers! but no, writing need not be your job or your hobby right now. This is for people who love to read and/or love to write. moreover, it’s about using your voice and finding ways to articulate the things you feel passionate about in a way that connects with an audience. that applies to many mediums.
we will have a set reading list so we can have mini-book club sessions and refer to the same books. that common ground will set us up for a fabulous time together, rich in ideas and inspiration.
how do i get there?
if you are flying into tasmania, launceston is the closest airport to the accommodation. we recommend self driving, or hiring a car, as the accommodation has parking and binalong bay is approximately 2.5 hours drive from launceston. we will be self-driving and car-pooling to certain activities. once booked, we will connect you with other travellers so you can share the costs of car hire/car pooling.
what is the bathroom situation?
not to worry, there is a lux shared amenities room with hot showers and toilets a short distance away from the accommodation areas!
what is the accommodation like?
the bush retreat is a boutique accommodation venue in the heart of the tasmanian bushland.
the accommodation options are:
five x private king bell tents
three x shared king bell tents
one x bunk house (shared room, 4 single beds and one king)
i want to come with someone i know well enough to share the king bed with in the private tent?
this is definitely an option, so secure the private tent and the second person will make your cost per person the same price as the twin share tent rate. confirm with us at operations@aweventurer.com.
what do I bring?
pens and notebooks! we will be doing some hiking so definitely bring sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. there is also plenty of opportunity for swimming, snorkelling and diving so please bring swimwear! please also bring your favourite journal and pen! if you do forget to bring anything, there are two IGA supermarkets nearby at St Helens town.
will i have downtime?
we have deliberately carved more downtime into the itinerary based on previous feedback. this is so you can absorb the lessons from workshops and allows for some more creative hours.
of course, if you’d rather stay busy, the bays and beaches and towns are all a short drive away.
