Rio Carnival

what can be said about the carnival in rio de janeiro that hasn’t already been said? from the first edition in 1723 to the present day, it has typified the raucous,  invigorating party culture of south america. held each year for a week leading up to lent, visitors from around the world mingle with locals on the beaches of ipanema  and the nightclubs to soak up the electrifying energy. samba music and dancing will  flow from gathering crowds all over the city from night until day, with vibrantly  decorated costumed parades through the street art-lined boulevards.

Chinese New Year Celebrations in Singapore

chinese new year, also known as the lunar new year or spring festival, is  celebrated widely across the sinophone world and other parts of asia, and  singapore is a nation that does it in style. it marks the beginning of spring, and in 2022 the festivities will last from february 1 to the lantern festival on february 15.  as the year of the ox leaves and the roar of the tiger comes rushing in, singapore will come alive with red decorations, rowdy dinners, and lion dances to ward off the mythical ancient spirit nian. visit the buddha tooth relic temple in the historic, charming chinatown for your new year blessings, browse boutique cheongsam stores, or join local families at one of the many high-end restaurants serving traditional dishes from singapore’s different chinese dialect groups.

Fête du Citron

each february, in the seaside harbour city of menton, located on the french riviera,  locals celebrate the region’s specialty lemons through a parade in which floats and  sculptures are made using citrus fruits. this quirky lemon-themed festival is known  as the fête du citron, and the 1882 edition was even attended by queen victoria. the theme of the 2022 edition, which will run for just over a  fortnight from february 12 to 27, is ‘operas and dances’. highlights of the festival  include an exhibition of exquisite lemon sculptures in the biovès gardens which light  up at night, and parades with lemon floats, confetti, music and dancing.

Jaisalmer Desert Festival

in the middle of the thar desert, also known as the great indian desert, lies the city  of jaisalmer. the massive sandstone fort, dating back to the 12th century, houses around a quarter of the city’s population. jaisalmer’s culture has had been deeply  influenced by its jain community, with its skyline dotted by multiple jain temples.  each year, the desert festival is celebrated three days prior to the fill moon in the hindu month of magh. the four-day event is packed full of activities, from camel  riding, tours of the old city and showcases of rajasthani folk songs and dance. come february, the exuberant golden city will beat to the rhythm of polo matches, magic shows, turban  tying competitions, local bazaar vendors and fireworks.

Montréal en Lumière
