the geological wonders that feel like nature's sistine chapel

Marble Caves in Patagonia, Chile

Imagine sailing the ripples of Chile's largest glacial lake with rock walls covered in shades of blue, sapphire, sea foam and turquoise (pictured above). Found in the south of Chile, it is locally known as Capillas de Mármol. It is definitely far removed from civilisation, and is a fitting discovery to make when you are exploring the Patagonian wilderness.

Polignano a Mare, Italy

A beautiful small town located in Italy, Polignano a Mare has a wonderful cove and caves. Behind the beach, there is green pinewood and spontaneous vegetation, set among rocks. It’s Italy, so we can’t not recommend a restaurant. The Grotta Palazzese is a restaurant as well as a geological excursion, for it is set in a cave. It has an internationally renowned chef and one side overlooks the sea and the other towards the caves.

Waitomo, New Zealand

It’s all a bit lost world in this area of New Zealand. While this region packs in adrenaline with ziplines, abseiling, rock climbing, and black water rafting, the caves in and of themselves are an experience. The caves are beautiful and you can visit glow worm caves to see a constellation of neon lights clustered in patterns atop the cave ceiling. Even better, Waitomo is located 3 hours south of Auckland, so it’s an accessible day trip.

Sarakiniko Beach, Milos, Greece

Sarakiniko Beach Milos is considered as one of the most beautiful Greek beaches. It's located along the coastal road east of Adamas, also the most photographed spot of the island. It's so unforgettable, with long horizontal rocks bent over the sea, and lots of small and huge hollows all over the rocks, being eroded by time and saltwater. This amazing scenery is often compared to standing on the surface of the moon.

Cenote Calavera, Mexico

Cenote Calavera is one of the closest cenotes to the town of Tulum, yet it is still under the radar and quiet, 'Calavera' means Skull in Spanish. So, if you are going to have a one-day trip in Tulum, rent a car, and bring your bikini, to swim and dive. Have you ever tried a cliff jump? This cenote is a favourite place for many a first time leap.
